Observers

Observers are students, house officers, fellows, physicians, researchers, or faculty members who wish to participate in pertinent activities at Baylor College of Medicine or affiliated institutions as observers only.

Requirements Prior to Acceptance

  • Proof of being a student, house officer, fellow, physician, researcher, or faculty member of
    • an internationally approved medical school or
    • a research institution thoroughly investigated and recognized by the program director of Baylor College of Medicine's host department and, when appropriate, by the World Health Organization and/or the Association of American Medical Colleges
  • Copy of curriculum vitae
  • Sufficient proficiency in spoken and written English language to meet the criteria of the hosting department
    • Departments are responsible for ascertaining the spoken and written English proficiency of observers. Telephone or face-to-face interview and passing scores on the TOEFL test are strongly recommended.
  • BCM's host department chair's approval
    • If the visitor requests rotations in different departments, approval from each department chair must be obtained.
  • Proof of financial responsibility or support
  • Commitment to meet the health and safety requirements applicable to BCM students, house officers, fellows, physicians, researchers, or faculty
  • Proof of compliance with immunization requirements of BCM
    • All documentation must be translated into English.
  • Mandatory purchase of major medical insurance during time of elective for the duration of the stay purchased through BCM's Benefits Office
  • $50 nonrefundable fee for all observations lasting 0-6 months (additional $50 fee for extensions)
    • Check or money order to be made payable to "Baylor College of Medicine-International Services Office."
  • Observer form must be duly filled out and signed upon arrival at the International Services Office

Privileges

  • Strict observer status without direct patient contact in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners
  • If needed, assistance in obtaining an entry visa through the International Services Office
    • Indicate need for visa by immediately forwarding application to the International Services Office
  • Visitor's identification badge to be issued upon clearance by the International Services Office
  • Access to facilities of BCM and affiliated hospitals and to the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library
  • Maximum period of observation to be determined by the host department
  • No certificate is given.
    • The host department may provide a letter certifying that the observer has carried out specific observations at BCM and/or its affiliated hospitals.
