Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program

Weekly Conference Schedule

Many conferences and seminars are available in a rotating schedule and provide comprehensive exposure to clinical and research topics in neonatal-perinatal medicine. Each fellow adds to their teaching and presentation skills by being responsible for journal club and case discussions.

Monday ^

Neonatology Conference
The Monday Neonatology Conference rotates among Journal Club, Clinical Case Conference, and ECMO/iNO/Advanced Respiratory Ventilation Conference.

  • Neonatology Medical Literature Review (CME) (monthly)
    Coordinator: Michael E. Speer, M.D.
    One post-doctoral fellow analyzes a recent article in depth and details its background and methodology and the implications of the work.
  • Case Conference (CME) (monthly)
    Coordinator: Michael E. Speer, M.D. & Amy Good, M.D.
    Reviews and discusses the management of patients currently in a nursery.
  • ECMO/iNO/Advanced Respiratory Ventilation (monthly)
    Coordinator: Karen E. Johnson, M.D.
    Reviews the management of patients who have recently required treatment with extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or nitric oxide.

CNRC Postdoctoral Research Seminar (weekly)
Coordinator: William C. Heird, M.D.
A forum for those fellows training in the field of neonatal nutrition to discuss their research with faculty and other fellows. This ongoing interactive feedback facilitates the progress of research efforts.

Newborn Medicine Conference (CME) (weekly)
Coordinator: Joseph A. Garcia-Prats, M.D.
Topics related to clinical management of the neonate, covering all aspects of perinatal physiology.

Perinatal Physiology Conference
Coordinator: Joseph A. Garcia-Prats, M.D.
This course is taught by Section faculty and invited extramural speakers. Topics rotate around an 18-month cycle and cover all aspects of perinatal physiology.

Neonatology Research Conference (CME) (weekly)
Coordinator: Heidi Karpen, M.D.
Informal discussion between fellows and faculty presenting their research in progress and eliciting feedback from other members of the Section.

Ethics Rounds (CME) (3rd Thursday)
Coordinator: Eric C. Eichenwald, M.D.
Multidisciplinary conference to discuss ethical issues around neonatal care and case discussions.

CNRC Seminar Series (weekly)
Coordinator: Dennis M. Bier, M.D.
Features invited speakers from institutions around the country to provide clinical and scientific presentations to faculty, fellows, and staff of both the CNRC and Baylor College of Medicine.

Multidisciplinary Perinatal Conference (weekly)
Coordinator: Bella Belleza-Bascon
Designed to review complex perinatal cases at Baylor College of Medicine with a multidisciplinary team. The conference usually is conducted in a case presentation format followed by interactive discussion.

Pediatric Grand Rounds (weekly)
Coordinator: Mark A. Ward, M.D.
Topics cover general and subspecialty pediatrics.

Mortality Review Conference (monthly)
Coordinator: James M. Adams, M.D.
A traditional CPC conference where members of the Section review recent autopsies with the pediatric pathologists at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Subspecialty Case Conference (monthly)
Coordinator: Caraciolo Fernandes, M.D. & Amy Good, M.D.
Fellows present and discuss clinical cases managed with pediatric subspecialists including cardiology, surgery, gastroenterology, and endocrinology.

Perinatal Center Conference (monthly)
Coordinator: Gerardo Cabrera-Meza, M.D.
Review of perinatal issues of interest to the Neonatology Service at Texas Children’s Hospital and the Obstetrics Service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. The conference usually is conducted in case presentation format followed by a short, didactic summary and interactive discussion.

Nutrition Rounds
Coordinators: Steven A. Abrams, M.D., and
Diane Anderson, Ph.D., R.D., C.S.P., F.A.D.A.
The Neonatal Nutrition Service is led by Diane Anderson, PhD (Director) and Steven A. Abrams, MD (Medical Director) and is staffed by three neonatal dietitians, a neonatal pharmacist, and interested physicians and nurses. Several times a week, this service reviews complicated cases at the bedside.
